Clubs

Wake Up Club! The Wake Up Club is a City of Phoenix Police Department sponsored club that meets after school and during intersession breaks. Wake Up strives to educate youth and the community about the consequences of youth violence and encourages positive solutions. Its goals are to promote alternatives to violence and aggressive confrontations, encourage young people to consider the consequences of their choices, and build adult, youth and community leader involvement in the solutions to violence. Wake Up meets once or twice a week after school for community volunteering, lessons on violence related issues, and rewards.

While they play chess, they listen to “surf” music and also occasionally watch a gnarly surf movie! All of our moves are based on the surfing vernacular. To qualify as an official game, each player must shake their opponent’s hand and wish them good luck! At the end of the year, we have a “Tim Hogan Memorial Kahuna Klassic Chess Tournament”. Surf’s up Baby!
