Programs

As part of the regular school day programming, Alston School offers the following special area classes:

Art & Music – Combined programming integrates language arts skills into these arts.

P.E. - Cooperation and teamwork are emphasized as students learn how ot play games and sports activities as well as the rules behind them. Nutrition and healthy bodies are also emphasized through Alston’s P.E. program.

Library – Library skills and language arts skills are integrated while students explore literature and non-fiction selections. Students check out a book from the school library weekly. The Alston library hosts two book fairs throughout the year, as well as monthly family reading nights.

Computers – Students learn vocabulary tied to computer use and navigate various computer software programs, as well as the internet. Keyboarding skills are emphasized in grades 1 to 3.

Alston’s daily academic programming is based on meeting each child’s individual needs in an atmosphere of high expectations. Teachers use Differentiated Instruction techniques to support this individualized learning. Students with special needs are fully included in the regular classroom program, where the resource teacher team teaches and plans with the regular classroom teacher to support the child’s needs.

English Language Learners (ELLs) receive language support in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. As their English language skills develop, they are transitioned into a mainstream classroom. All teachers at Alston have been thoroughly trained in and use the SIOP model to support English Language Learners.
